Four generations, one sunrise

The Murugesan family, Madurai · 20 December 2025

A great-grandmother's wish to see the southern tip, and a family that made it happen with two wheelchairs and a lot of patience.

01

Paati's wish

My grandmother had wanted to see Kanyakumari since she was a girl. At ninety-one, she still said it. We called Jai Travels expecting to be told it was too difficult. Instead they asked what time she woke up in the morning.

02

The early morning

They arranged a ground-floor room, a wheelchair at the ferry jetty and a driver who waited by the sea wall. At five in the morning, four generations of us watched the sun come out of the water. Paati did not say a word for a long time, and then she said, it is exactly as I imagined.

03

What made it work

It was the small things. A blanket in the car. A guide who slowed down without being asked. A hotel that had cooked plain rice porridge, just in case. We did not feel like a difficult group for a single moment.

The trip

Take the same trip to Kanyakumari.
