Race Course Road Revival
A 1970s house kept, repaired and opened to the light instead of being demolished.
The brief
Fix chronic dampness, add a bedroom, brighten dark rooms, and do it for less than a rebuild would cost.
The owners were told twice that their 1970s house should be knocked down. We opened the walls, found a sound frame under a decade of damp, and proposed the alternative: keep the structure, replace what had failed, and open the back of the house to the garden.
Our approach
Waterproofing and structural repair came first, before any finish went on. Two dark rooms were joined into one large living space, a new first-floor bedroom went on a light steel deck, and the new elevation was kept plain so the original character stayed visible.
