Kalathur Family House
A north-facing courtyard house for three generations on a 40 x 60 plot.
The brief
A three-generation home with a ground-floor suite, a pooja room the family could gather in, and a plot that only allowed 60 per cent coverage.
The Balasubramaniams wanted grandparents, parents and two children under one roof without anyone feeling crowded. The answer was a central courtyard that pulls light and air through every room, with a ground-floor suite for the elders so nobody climbs stairs they do not want to.
Our approach
We placed a 10 x 10 ft courtyard at the centre and organised the rooms around it, which let us keep the outer walls solid against the afternoon heat. The structure is a conventional RCC frame with filler walls in solid blocks, and the courtyard roof has a removable shade for monsoon months.
